A finding is real when it changes a decision
I have sat in a lot of readouts. The slides are good, the room nods, everyone says thank you, and then nothing changes. The study was fine. It just did not land anywhere.
After enough of these you stop asking was the research good and start asking did it change a decision. That is the only test that matters.
Start from the decision, not the question
Before a study I ask the team one thing. What will you do differently depending on what we find. If there is no answer, the research is entertainment. Useful sometimes, but not the point.
One finding beats ten
A readout with twelve insights gives the team permission to pick the one they already agreed with. A readout with one clear finding forces a real conversation. Cut hard. Say the thing.
Put a person in the room, not a percentage
Numbers settle arguments but they rarely start action. A short clip of a real person stuck on a real screen does more than any chart. Let the team feel the problem before you explain it.
Follow the finding after the meeting
The work is not done when you present. It is done when the ticket changes, or the roadmap moves, or someone says out loud we are not going to build that. I now write the decision down next to the finding, so we can tell later whether it was real.
Good research that nobody uses is just expensive note taking. The craft I care about most is the last mile, from a finding to a decision.
